Community Engagement Core attends MLK Jr. Day event, shares info on VOCs, and hosts community forum

CLEAR's Community Engagement Core (CEC) was one of approximately 20 organizations that participated in a "tabling" where residents of Southwest Detroit could visit with community organizations, get information, help and products, on January 20. At the event, CEC team members, led by Dr. Lyke Thompson talked with 32 residents, many of whom signed up to attend an upcoming CEC forum and/or asked for a site visit at their home to test for VOCs.

Shortly afterward, the CEC presented a forum to a group of 11 residents about CLEAR in general and more specifically how they could reduce VOCs in their homes. The forum resulted in vibrant discussion between the CEC and participating residents, with several questions and answers.

Event participants meet with and receive resources from community groups

The goal of the CEC is to improve public health and reduce disparities across Detroit through community engagement, outreach and education. The January 20 event was sponsored by Wayne State University's AmeriCorps Urban Safety and Marathon Petroleum Corp, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr on MLK Jr Day. The event provided hundreds of Detroiters with fun activities, refreshments, and resources. Resources at the Wayne State event included AmeriCorps community training for overdose rescue, food giveaways, and items like vacuums and tree samplings.
